What is a Finance Director?

A Finance Director is a crucial role for any business in whatever industry.  They are essentially responsible for all monetary resources, from paying employees, to budget setting and allocating resource across the business.

What is a Financial Controller?

Whilst the finance director will be making all of the big decisions, the FC also also plays an essential part in the monetary side of your business.  The Financial Controller will work on all of the day-to-day operations in the finance department, reporting directly to the FD.  The person in this role will work with the wider financial team to ensure everything is running smoothly, and observing the daily workings of the finance department.

As this role involves working closely with team members, you'll need to ensure this person has wide experience across all aspects of finance, as well as being a key people person.  Woodrow Mercers team of expert consultants can help you find the right person for your business.  ​

Who would suit a Financial Role?

It goes without saying that you will need to have a competent finance background, such as accountancy of finance management, especially if you want to be an FD or FC.  Having a love for numbers and data is, of course, a must and being able to interpret data and spot patterns is a ey element of working in a financial role.

Whilst understanding financial elements is integral, you'll also need to be great at working with others, and be able to explain logic and reasoning behind decisions and learning.

Mark has been involved in Woodrow Mercer since its formation in 2012. He is an experienced Finance Director, having worked in a permanent and interim capacity at this level for over 25 years. In recent years he has also recruited for a number of large corporate and SME clients at both FD and FC level. Fiercely competitive, he loves the challenge of a Tough Mudder.


Neil Muffitt

Regional Director Leeds

With more than 25 years experience around board room tables, Neil believes that objectivity and an ability to challenge the status quo are essential for effective FDs. He currently recruits and manages the team of portfolio FDs and in his spare time has been known to tread the boards in the local amdram society.


Sara Clark

Associate Director

Sara specialises in part/newly qualified, graduate, AAT and transactional finance recruitment, typically covering the £20-40k market. Starting out on a graduate scheme, she has specialised in finance recruitment for 7 of the 10 years since, operating mainly in West/North Yorkshire.


David Clark

Associate Director

David joined us in June 2017, having worked for Michael Page for 9 years. For the last 4 he was business manager within their interim finance division in West Yorkshire, where he recruited across all industry sectors. He will now continue to act as an interim specialist for senior finance appointments at qualified level across Yorkshire. David has built his reputation on a strong technical understanding of his clients and candidates needs, resulting in a high level of repeat business. Outside of work David is one of our sportier members of the team as a keen darts and poker player.


Natalie McGregor

Business Director

Having spent seven years with Michael Page, Natalie has a strong track record in recruitment with experience of working across many sectors. She now specialises in the recruitment of entry level and part/newly qualified finance roles and is working closely with Sara Clark to build this division. A keen runner and boxer, she has temporarily put her sporting pursuits to one side as she focuses her energies on her young family.


Milo Clark

Client Partnerships Director

​Milo joined our Leeds office earlier this year and despite his stature, has made a huge impact in a very short space of time. His role is integral to office morale and he specialises in greeting visitors and client meetings - his presence has already assisted Sara in agreeing several very lucrative deals.
